About this wine
Character
A Grosses Gewächs from Rheinhessen, grown on limestone and built accordingly: taut, cool, with saline precision rather than broad fruit. 12.5% vol. and dry élevage keep the wine lean, with length coming from structure rather than fruit weight. A Riesling built for bottle ageing, and the magnum gives it a slower pace to do so.
Terroir and origin
Battenfeld-Spanier farms sites in the Wonnegau and the Zellertal valley, where limestone soils give Riesling a distinctive texture, tauter and cooler. In the Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott, this style reaches its peak: the limestone pulls the wine toward verticality and keeps the acidity cool, even after the warm, dry ripening conditions of the 2023 vintage.
Grape variety and winemaking
Pure Riesling. The estate has worked biodynamically since 2005, regularly applying preparations 500 and 501, with lunar phases guiding the rhythm of vineyard work. In the cellar, the wine ferments spontaneously in large wooden casks and steel tanks, with minimal sulphur use and no fining agents. Accompanying rather than correcting is the guiding principle.
On the palate
Pale straw yellow with greenish highlights. On the nose, lemon zest, yellow peach and apricot, alongside a floral note of white blossom. The palate is dry and linear, the acidity vibrant, underpinned by a saline minerality that carries the long finish.
Food pairing suggestions
Grilled turbot with herb butter, scallops with cauliflower or pike-perch. Veal sweetbreads with fine herbs and aged Comté also complement its saline structure.
Special features
Battenfeld-Spanier is a VDP estate and has worked biodynamically since 2005. The 1500 ml magnum ages more slowly than the standard bottle.
