About this wine

Character

A Riesling built on tension rather than fullness: cool, taut, with a saline clarity. At 12.5% Vol. it stays light on its feet, the acidity sets the direction, and the finish remains chalky and long. A wine with years ahead of it.

Terroir and origin

The Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott lies in the Zellertal, where Battenfeld-Spanier farms limestone soils. The limestone gives the Riesling a distinctive texture: tighter, cooler, with saline precision. In this site, the estate's style reaches its peak.

Grape variety and vinification

Riesling, vinified dry as a Grosses Gewächs by a VDP estate. The estate has farmed biodynamically since 2005, using preparations 500 and 501 and working to the rhythm of the lunar cycle. In the cellar, restraint is the guiding principle: spontaneous fermentation in large wooden casks and steel tanks, minimal use of sulphur, no fining agents.

On the palate

The entry is cool and crisp, with lemon and green apple, followed by white blossom and a fine herbal spice note. The acidity carries the wine long, and its chalky backbone sustains it through to a saline finish.

Food recommendations

Pair with pan-fried sole fillet, white poultry in a lemon-herb jus, scallops on leeks, or asparagus with hollandaise sauce. Also a clear match for raw fish and wild garlic risotto.

Special features

The 1500 ml magnum lets the 2024 vintage mature more slowly and gently than the standard bottle, making it an ideal wine for a larger gathering.
