About this wine

Character

The San Lazaro 2021 is a Rioja made from pure Tempranillo, built on clarity and drive: red-fruited, lean, with a distinct acidic backbone and fine tannin. Power isn't the focus here — precision is.

Terroir and origin

The wine comes from a single 1.6-hectare plot in the municipality of Laguardia in Rioja Alavesa, with a southeast exposure. The Tempranillo vines are 68 years old and root in sandy-clay soils; to the north, the Sierra Cantabria shelters the area.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Tempranillo. The grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously, with ageing in oak barrels of various sizes and ages. The vineyards are farmed organically, without herbicides or synthetic chemicals, with some soil work done using horses.

On the palate

Juicy, carried by a taut, gripping acidity, with the finest tannins and a silky texture. Crisp cherry, red grapefruit and violet already define the nose, bright and airy. The 14.5% ABV is as unobtrusive as the oak. The finish is long and aromatic.

Food pairings

With Jamón Ibérico and with potato soup with smoked salmon.

Distinctive features

Artadi left the DOCa Rioja at the end of 2015 because its regulations forbade naming the vineyard. Since then, every wine has carried the name of its plot rather than an ageing classification. San Lazaro is one of nine single vineyards farmed by Juan Carlos López de Lacalle together with his children Carlos and Patricia; vinification still takes place in Laguardia.
