About this wine
Character
A Tempranillo built on clarity rather than power: cool fruit, fine tannin, palpable minerality. Artadi extracts with restraint, and that is exactly what keeps the San Lázaro 2022 agile despite its 14.5% ABV.
Terroir and origin
San Lázaro is one of nine single vineyards that Juan Carlos López de Lacalle farms with his children Carlos and Patricia in Rioja Alavesa, 56 hectares in total around Laguardia. The Sierra Cantabria shelters the plots, whose soils are calcareous and clay-rich. For López de Lacalle, it is the soil that determines a wine's hierarchy, not the time spent in barrel.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Tempranillo from organic farming, without herbicides or synthetic chemicals; part of the soil is worked with a horse. Fermentation takes place in open vessels with gentle extraction. Ageing in French oak provides structure without masking the fruit.
On the palate
Deep ruby red with violet highlights. On the nose, dark forest berries and ripe plum, joined by chalk, undergrowth and subtle oak spice. Dry, dense and focused, with silky tannin; a fresh vein of acidity carries the wine through to its mineral finish.
Food pairings
With lamb chop, tender beef fillet or braised Ibérico pork. A mature Manchego also finds a fitting frame here.
Highlights
In late 2015, Artadi left the DOCa Rioja. Its regulations recognised only the Crianza and Reserva categories, based on barrel ageing time, and even prohibited naming individual vineyards on the back label. Vinification still takes place in Laguardia, in the same cellar as for the past forty years.
