About this wine
Character
A red wine that puts precision above power. Artadi relies on lighter extraction and restrained oak, and it is exactly from this that the Tempranillo draws its finesse: focused, cool, with a tension that carries across decades without closing up in its youth.
Terroir and origin
The single vineyard Viña El Pisón lies in Laguardia in the Rioja Alavesa, at 480 metres of altitude and sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria. The parcel forms an amphitheatre of limestone and chalk; the vines were planted in 1945. For Juan Carlos López de Lacalle, great wines are not made in the cellar, but in the vineyard.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Tempranillo from organic viticulture, without herbicides or synthetic chemistry, with the soil partly worked by horse. Fermentation takes place in open vats, allowing gentle extraction; ageing takes place in French barriques, which lend structure without masking the fruit. No reverse osmosis, no micro-oxygenation, no overripeness.
On the palate
Silky texture over extremely fine-grained tannin, carried by fresh acidity. Cool dark berry fruit meets nuances of oolong tea and graphite, with the oak remaining in the background. The finish is long and mineral-driven.
Food pairings
With braised lamb, roasted pigeon breast or pink-roasted beef fillet. A mature Manchego also suits this structure.
Distinctive features
At the end of 2015, Artadi left the DOCa Rioja, whose regulations forbade naming individual vineyards on the back label. Since then, the wines have carried the name of their parcel instead of an ageing classification such as Crianza or Reserva. Vinification still takes place in Laguardia, in the same cellar as for the past forty years.
