Domaine Vacheron

Jean-Dominique Vacheron - Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Certified as a biodynamic estate for ten years now, Domaine Vacheron is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Sancerrois. Under the guidance of Jean-Dominique and his cousin Jean-Laurent, this family domaine produces a range of distinct single-vineyard Sancerres in white, red and rosé. The estate encompasses 46 hectares of vineyards and has been BIODYVIN-certified since 2005 – making it one of the first wineries in the region to achieve this distinction. Each vineyard site has its own character: the caillottes soils bring mineral freshness, the terres blanches lend depth and complexity, whilst the silex sites provide intense aromatics. Jean-Dominique gained experience in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Jean-Laurent with Aubert de Villaine in Burgundy – this Burgundian precision now defines their unique Sancerre style.

Four generations of biodynamic viticulture

The story of Domaine Vacheron begins with its founding father, Maurice Vacheron. Over four generations the estate has developed into one of the most renowned producers in the Sancerrois. In 2005 the domaine was one of the first estates in the region to receive BIODYVIN certification, a milestone for biodynamic viticulture on the Loire. Today the cousins Jean-Dominique and Jean-Laurent Vacheron run the 46-hectare estate together. Their different apprenticeships, Jean-Dominique in the Rhône valley at Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Jean-Laurent with Aubert de Villaine in Burgundy, have merged into a singular philosophy: Burgundian precision meets Loire elegance. Diversity of terroir at the highest level

The vineyards of Domaine Vacheron extend over various soil types characteristic of the Sancerre appellation. Caillottes, soils rich in limestone, give the wines mineral freshness and vivacity. Terres blanches of marl and clay-limestone provide depth, complexity and ageing potential. Particularly remarkable are the silex parcels. The flint stores heat and gives the Sauvignon Blanc a characteristic smoky note and intense aromatics. The single vineyards are vinified separately to express the particularities of each terroir as fully as possible.

L'Enclos des Remparts: the crown jewel

Sancerre wine landscape, Domaine Vacheron Among the numerous single vineyards, "Guigne-Chèvres" stands out with its pure silex terroir. Even more exclusive is L'Enclos des Remparts, a parcel of ungrafted vines, so-called francs de pied. These vines, which grow without being grafted onto American rootstocks, are regarded as a particularly authentic expression of terroir. Alongside the white Sancerres, the red wines from Pinot Noir are also compelling. The "Belle Dame" shows Burgundian finesse with astonishing depth, proof that Sancerre Rouge can be far more than an insider's tip.

Pioneers in the Sancerrois

Domaine Vacheron has played a major part in establishing Sancerre's reputation as a source of great terroir wines. Together with Domaine Claude Riffault, the Vacherons are among the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in the region. Whether the fresh Sancerre blanc as an introduction, the complex series of single-vineyard wines or the elegant rosé, every wine from Domaine Vacheron bears the signature of winemakers who have perfected their craft over generations.
